SMCAA Curriculum Bootcamp 2025

Ensuring a Comprehensive, Guaranteed, and Viable Curriculum

June 23-24, 2025
Old Kinderhook

Schedule of Events

Session Descriptions

Whether you have a solid grasp on curriculum writing and well underway to having your curriculum written or if you are new to the curriculum writing process, the 2025 SMCAA Curriculum Bootcamp has you covered!

This year we will be offering two different pathways/groups to help meet the needs of our member districts. The focus of Group A will be on conducting in-house curriculum audits. Participants in this group will work on reviewing their written curriculum to ensure it meets the rigor necessary to help their students perform at high levels of achievement.

Group B participants will have hands-on experience on curriculum writing. From reviewing standards and determining priority standards to determining learning activities, participants will engage in all steps of the curriculum writing process. At the end of the bootcamp, attendees will walk out with at least one completed unit to take back with them to use as a guide with their own district. Districts are encouraged to bring department heads or key curriculum leads to participate in this interactive experience.

In addition to the targeted tracks, both groups will come together the second morning and learn from Jerome Williams, ACT Account Executive, as he shares information on using the College and Career Readiness Standards to help align our curriculum to not only the MLS, but also the ACT.

Participants in both tracks will leave the Bootcamp with the skills needed and a plan in place to ensure they have a comprehensive, guaranteed, and viable curriculum in place. Gather up your curriculum directors, building admins, and key curriculum leaders and join us June 2nd and 3rd for this exciting event!

Breakout Session Descriptors

There is an old saying “only a wet baby likes change”, yet change is the one thing that we know will always be a constant when it comes to the world of education. In fact, one of the most difficult aspects of our jobs as educational leaders is both managing and leading change. Sometimes the change is not our choice, as is the case with new legislative mandates or when the local Board of Education adopts new policies. Other times, the change is planned based on evidence and discussions with staff and fellow stakeholders.

So what are we to do? How do we go about handling change while keeping our students first? Join us at our 2025 SMCAA Curriculum Directors Retreat as we look at “Riding the Rollercoaster of Change” and reflect on how potential changes in funding, staff, and student needs could affect us in the 2025-2026 school year.

Here is a snapshot of the learning we will experience together:

  • Five skills central to implementing evaluative principles
  • Research and data that could have an impact on our classrooms and direct instruction, staffing, curriculum and resources
  • Review and discussion regarding our current academic state and what we know we will need to zero in on in the coming months
  • Developing a plan of attack that will focus on our most important goals: student growth and teacher support

As an added bonus, lunch on Day One will have a special guest from DESE to share departmental information. The sessions for this Retreat will include active learning processes as attendees apply what they are learning to themselves and their role in the district. Make plans to join us and fellow curriculum-oriented individuals from across the state this July!
