Dr. Katherine McKnight is a dynamic presenter, dedicated teacher, and award-winning author.  She began her career in education over 30 years ago as a middle school and high school English and social studies teacher in Chicago Public Schools. In addition to speaking at professional development conferences, Katie is a regular consultant in schools and classrooms in the United States and Internationally.

Dr. McKnight’s 15-year distinguished university career culminated in her appointment as Distinguished Professor of Research at National Louis University. Katie is the founder of Engaging Learners, an educational company built around her successful Literacy & Learning Center model. Her work in educational leadership, literacy, and student skill development has resulted in unprecedented academic achievement in many struggling schools.

Dr. McKnight has received several awards for her publications and teaching at the university level. She has authored over 20 books that support educational strategies to engage all learners. Titles include the best-selling The Teacher’s Big Book of Graphic Organizers, winner of the 2013 Teachers’ Choice Award, and Literacy & Learning Centers for the Big Kids, grades 4-12. In 2008 she co-authored the popular book The Second City Guide to Improv in the Classroom: Using Improvisation to Teach Skills and Boost Learning

Call For Presenters

As the 2024-25 school year kicks off, we know Literacy will remain a primary focus for all districts, but how can ALL teachers help support our literacy endeavors?  Content Area teachers are not always sure how to support literacy or even recognize when the lack of literacy skills may impact students’ progress. Our fall conference keynote speaker will focus on literacy in the content area, along with an additional presentation from the curriculum department at DESE.

SMCAA is searching for teachers and leaders to share ideas that are working towards literacy instruction at all grade levels.  We also want to hear ideas related to curriculum development in your districts that are working well for you; content area specific curricular issues that you would like to share; or even tips for struggling, overworked curriculum directors. It is through the sharing of what we do well and what concerns us that makes our work stronger and more effective.

If you believe what you can share will meet any of these needs, please submit a proposal to present at our Fall Conference.  It is through the sharing of what we do well and what concerns us that makes us all stronger and more effective.

Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00p.m.

SMCAA Members: $340.00 per person; Early Bird Special before August 20th – $315.00 Per Person

MEMBER SPECIAL – Team of 3 or more – $290.00 Per person

Non- Members: $440.00 per person

Ask for the Show Me Curriculum Administrators Association rate of $132.00 per night. Code:  SHOW,  Conference Room Block Deadline September 9, 2024. This rate will only be honored based upon availability after this date.
