Beyond the ELA Classroom

The Science of Reading continues to be a major for districts across the state of Missouri. This focus should move beyond the elementary ELA classroom as our state standards and assessments require significant reading and comprehension skills. We are excited to bring you important information as well as an address from the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Karla Eslinger and updates from the curriculum section at DESE.
Day 1 – October 29th: Dr. Katie McKnight, our keynote speaker is a dedicated teacher and award-winning author with over 30 years of experience in middle school and high school English and Social Studies. During our morning session, Dr. McKnight will share skills related to explicit instruction with systematic modeling and scaffolding in content areas. Attendees will be provided easy-to-implement strategies that will yield big results. In the afternoon Dr. McKnight will address the do’s and don’ts when teaching reading in content areas. Other events include academic roundtables, as well as a DESE update from Susan German, DESE Coordinator of Curriculum.
Day 2 – October 30th: Participants will engage in two different breakout sessions. Topics include:
- The Power of Words-Vocabulary Development
- Preparing Your Educators for Literacy at the College Level
- Supporting Literacy Through AI and Beyond
Our culminating event will include lunch with a message from DESE Commissioner of Education, Dr. Karla Eslinger.
