September Tip of the Month: Getting Started with the Lesson Planner
The Lesson Planner makes it easy to organize, schedule, and track your classroom instruction — all in one place. Here’s what you need to know to get up and running.
Before You Begin (Admins Only)
System Administrators need to complete a few setup steps first:
- Enable the Lesson Plan component under Administrative Functions > District Options > Classroom and Assessment Configuration
- Create Lesson Plan Schedules (these represent your bell or block schedules)
- Configure Lesson Plan Templates to match your district’s needs
Creating a Class
Every teacher starts by setting up a class — you only do this once! Go to Classroom > Add a Class, enter the class name, choose a template, and save. Elementary teachers typically have one class; secondary teachers will have one per period.
Creating a Lesson Plan
Go to Classroom > Lesson Plans > Add Lesson Plan. From there, choose your class, template, date, and period, then select the relevant course, unit, and topic. Add learning targets and activities, name your plan, and save. Your lesson plan will appear in the calendar and plan book views.

Curriculum management is a large undertaking for school districts. Subjects each have their own manuals and each course has specific criteria to be met. Many districts could fill bookcases with their curriculum guides. But in order to find, compare or analyze curriculum, a team of educators would have to dust off the manuals and go through each handbook individually. Short on manpower and wanting to find a more efficient way to organize curriculum, David Miller, Coordinator for Assessment & Library Services in the Pattonville (MO) School District, began looking for alternatives to this rusty, dusty routine. The Pattonville Success Story.
