The Annual Performance Review (APR) contains a wealth of information about student performance and school and district outcomes—but knowing how to use the data effectively starts with understanding what is behind the numbers.

In this introductory session, curriculum directors and educational leaders will explore the APR through a practical 5 Ws framework designed to answer the questions leaders need to know before they can effectively use APR data for decision-making.

The 5 Ws

WHO — Who is included? Explore who is represented in the different areas of the APR and consider who should have access to APR information within a school or district.

WHAT — What is included? Unpack the components of the APR and identify the reports and data points that are most useful when reviewing school and district performance.

WHEN — When is the data available? Examine the APR data timeline and identify when key information becomes available so leaders can plan for meaningful review and analysis.

WHERE — Where does the data come from? Trace the sources of information that contribute to the APR and develop a clearer understanding of how the data come together to tell a story about performance.

WHY — Why does the APR matter? Move beyond viewing APR as an accountability requirement and examine how the information can support conversations about curriculum, instruction, assessment, student outcomes, and school improvement.

Audience: Curriculum Directors, District Leaders, Principals, Assistant Superintendents, and other educational leaders responsible for interpreting and using school and district performance data.

Materials Needed/Interactive Level: Mid-level interaction as participants will be asked to reflect and share throughout the workshop.
