On behalf of DESE, SMCAA would like to share the following information. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is seeking a group of dedicated educators to join a committee focused on improving how Missouri measures student progress toward ambitious ELA and mathematics content standards. EdMetric is assisting DESE by facilitating this work.
DESE is forming a committee of eight (8) ELA and eight (8) mathematics educators from across the state who bring expertise in teaching ELA and mathematics content to a wide range students in grades 3 through 8, and who have a passion for creating meaningful student assessments.
Committee Goals
- ELA committee members will provide critical input to guide improvements in the design and evaluation of writing measures, ensuring we provide practicable feedback for educators to guide student writing success. Specifically, we want to design a scoring rubric that gives actionable feedback to students and teachers.
- Math committee members will help define mastery for grade 5 math skill clusters, ensuring they reflect the skills and knowledge most important for student learning and success. Again, our end goal is to provide actionable feedback to students and teachers.
Why Participate?
- Make an impact by contributing your expertise to shape how Missouri’s statewide assessments measure student progress toward ambition ELA and mathematics standards. Collaborate with fellow educators and assessment specialists.
Commitment: Committee members will participate in a two-day, in-person meeting in Columbia, MO on October 20-21, 2025 , where they will review materials and participate in discussion. Three 90-minute virtual follow-up meetings will be held in November and December. All virtual meetings will be scheduled for late afternoon to avoid school hours. Participants will receive a $600 stipend at the conclusion of the virtual meetings.
Who Should Apply: We encourage applications from educators who:
- Currently teach or have recently (i.e., in the last two years) taught English language arts and/or math at the elementary or middle school level.
- Have experience teaching writing or math and using writing or math assessments in the classroom.
- Represent the diversity of Missouri’s students, schools, and regions.
If you are interested in applying, please complete this brief application (click on this link) form by October 9, 2025. Notifications for selection will be sent out no later than October 13, 2025.
Your voice is vital to this work. We hope you will consider lending your expertise to this important effort.
