Curriculum Directors Cohort: Durable Skills

Research from America Succeeds, which looked at data from 82 million job postings, found approximately seven out of ten requested skills we classified as “durable skills.”  Durable skills include a combination of how to use what you know, as well as character traits. These skills in the past have been referred to as “soft skills”, however this phrase does not do these items justice. These skills are not “soft” at all; instead, they are skills which equip students not only for their secondary schooling, but also for post-secondary education and career development/acquisition.

During this cohort, we will look at research and data provided by America Succeeds to see how we can integrate these durable skills into our district curriculum. We will begin by doing an overview of durable skills, what they are, their importance, and the state of durable skills in Missouri. Using the ten main durable skill keywords, we will determine (as a group) a set of Durable Skill Priority Standards to focus on throughout the year. Each month, we will explore a different set of skills and delve into what this would look like within our classrooms. An additional outcome of this cohort, in conjunction with becoming more familiar with the integration of durable skills, is the creation of rubrics which can be utilized to determine a student’s proficiency for the given skill.

This cohort is designed for curriculum directors, both new and veteran, instructional coaches, and building and district leadership who wish to incorporate more durable skills into their students’ academic journey.
