Evening Whole Group Session: 

Mathematics at the Middle School:  What Your Curriculum Needs to Address the Required Instructional Shifts

To address our increased concerns across the state regarding our mathematics student performance, Deborah will present practical information and ideas on what is needed to adjust your curriculum to address the instructional shifts required to meet the performance expectations of the new standards and assessment. Included will be suggestions for curriculum review, along with sample documents and additional information.

Morning Whole Group Session: 

Using the Item Specifications Document to Enhance Curriculum and Assessment

Presenters: Mr. Shaun Bates DESE Director of Assessment; Mrs. Roblyn Melton, District Assessment Director Farmington R-7

Targeted Audience:  Curriculum Writers and Directors, Administrators and Teachers

All good curriculum starts with quality assessments aligned to the standards chosen for the unit of instruction. The Missouri Learning Standards are just the beginning of the development of quality assessments.  The Item Specification Documents, developed by DESE with the participation of experienced Missouri teachers, help teachers write assessments that truly align to the standards.  During this workshop, we will use the item specification document to guide you through assessment development and curriculum enhancement.

Afternoon Breakouts Sessions:

  1. How to Create Performance Tasks in K-12 Mathematics


    Presenters: Deborah Sanchez, Program Mentor in Mathematics, Teacher Education faculty, Western Governors University; Shea Thomas, Elementary Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator, Raytown C-2 Schools

    Targeted Audience:  Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Curriculum Coordinators and Writers

    This presentation will provide specific information and practice in the development of MAP-alike performance tasks in Elementary and Secondary mathematics.  Performance tasks concentrate on problem-solving and serve as both learning experiences and formative assessment tools. These tasks can deepen student understanding in key concepts by requiring the use of overall knowledge as well as specific skills.

  2. The Three - Year Progression of an RTI Program


    Presenter:  Mr. Zack Bruner, Principal, Macon County R-IV

    Targeted Audience:  Elementary Administrators, Curriculum Directors and Elementary Teachers

    At Macon County R-IV, we are three years into our elementary RTI program that is entitled "Raider Roundup.” Join us as we review the three-year progression of this program to address the need to intervene and provide more reading and math instruction to our elementary students in order to get many of them on target, while continuing to improve, and even enriching many of them. This could be the process you may need to address your students’ need for specific interventions in Math and ELA.

  3. Interpreting Data to Make Data-Driven Decisions


    Presenter: Melissa Husereau, Director of Teaching and Learning, St. Clair School District

    Targeted Audience: Administrators, Curriculum Directors, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

    Data is a great educational tool when it can be organized, interpreted, analyzed and used successfully to make instructional decisions. This session will focus on how to organize and use student performance data, both state and district level, to make instructional decisions that make an impact on classroom instruction and student achievement.

  4. #GoOpen with Free Digital Resources for Classroom Instruction in ELA and Mathematics


    Presenter: Steve Ritter, Superintendent, Sherwood Cass R-VIII School District

    Targeted Audience:  Administrators, Teachers, Curriculum Coordinators, Instructional Coaches

    Learn about free digital resources for K-12 education. Open Educational Resources are available from many different resources and come in a variety of styles from digital textbooks to articles, to digital manipulatives. Get the administrator perspective and the teacher perspective during the presentation. Also learn how to adapt these resources to your curriculum and reinvest your district funds into time, technology, and teachers.

  5. Tiered Intervention model for Special Education


    Presenter: Mollie Bolton, Curriculum Coordinator, Special School District

    Targeted Audience:  Teachers, Administrators, Curriculum Coordinators, Instructional Coaches

    Intervention does not start or stop at Special Education.  What does a tiered intervention model look        like in Special Education Join us for our presentation on how we developed our tiered intervention          model, what this process looks like in Special Education and how it supports students who have qualified for Special Education. This presentation may also provide excellent information for those students identified for Tier III Intervention in Mathematics and ELA.

Second Morning Whole Group Session:  Writing Prompts and Scoring

Presenter:  Lisa Scroggs, DESE Assistant Director of English Language Arts

The new ELA writing assessments for grades 4 and 8, English I, and English II include rigorous prompts requiring students to incorporate source material and show command of different writing genres. Session participants will learn how to unpack the new prompts and scoring guides to help students be better prepared for the state writing assessments.
