Instruction and Assessment That Counts!


Join your colleagues from across the state for our annual SMCAA Fall Conference, October 29-30, 2019. Be ready for two days that will focus on conceptual teaching and learning in mathematics and formative assessment development for all content areas. Dr. John SanGiovanni, author of the Mine the Gap Series K-8 for Mathematics, will present dynamic, doable activities to engage students in meaningful ways. Jana Loge, Missouri expert in Formative Assessment, will show us how to artfully craft items that will efficiently and effectively provide evidence of student learning. Our breakout presenters from across the state will share their successes in teaching and learning. Come ready to learn and leave with more than you ever expected in Instruction and Assessment That Counts!


Keynotes

John SanGiovanni is the Coordinator of Mathematics in Howard County, Maryland. There he leads mathematics curriculum, digital learning, assessment, and professional development for more than 40 elementary schools. John also works as a graduate program coordinator for mathematics leadership at McDaniel College in Maryland. He is an author of more than a dozen books featuring a range of topics including effective basic fact instruction, mathematics content and pedagogy, school-based leadership actions, evidence of student thinking, and developing number sense. John is a national consultant for curriculum development and professional learning. As a former Maryland Mathematics Teacher of the Year, he continues to be active in professional organizations. He recently served on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and currently serves as the President of the Maryland Council of Supervisors of Mathematics.

Jana Loge is passionate about building collaborative capacity in schools to foster high levels of learning for all! As a 25 year veteran at the MSU/Agency for Teaching, Leading, & Learning and her experiences as a classroom teacher, MAP Facilitator, MRI (Missouri Reading Initiative) Literacy Coach, PLC (Professional Learning Communities) Specialist, Adaptive Schools Agency Trainer, and Dyslexia Consultant, she has developed expertise in curriculum design; assessment design and development; formative assessment practices (including feedback and student involvement); Data Teams; literacy instruction/intervention; and content literacy.

Fall Conference Highlight! 

Our State Commissioner, Dr. Margie VanDeven, has been traveling the state meeting with district boards, leaders and stakeholders sharing important information about education.  We are pleased that she will be joining us during lunch the first day of our conference to speak with us.
